I Had More Energy Than Women Half My Age -- Here's What I Was Doing Differently
I see it all the time. Women 40+... exhausted, on a handful of medications, no energy, not moving, not feeling good. And a lot of them have just accepted it. Like this is what getting older looks like and there's nothing to be done about it.
I refuse to accept that. And I want you to refuse it too.
Because here's what I know from over a decade of living this: your energy is not gone. It's just waiting on you to give it what it needs.
It Started With a Bike and a Cup of Coffee
About ten years ago — maybe more — I started getting up every single morning and riding my exercise bike for twenty to thirty minutes. I was doing event marketing back then, working events surrounded by people half my age. And I had more energy than most of them. Every single day.
On the days I couldn't ride — no equipment available, weather not cooperating, location I wasn't comfortable walking alone — I could feel the difference immediately. My knees felt it. My energy felt it. My whole day felt it. That morning movement wasn't just exercise. It was the thing that made everything else work.
I was doing my own version of a morning routine long before I ever picked up Hal Elrod's The Miracle Morning. I had stumbled into pieces of it naturally — movement, mindset, showing up for myself before the day took over. I just didn't have a name for it yet.
What Changed Four Months Ago
About four months ago I actually started reading the book, and I built out my full version of the SAVERS — affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, and scribing. I had already been doing some of it. But I added something new at the very beginning, before anything else.
A glass of room temperature water the moment I wake up.
It sounds almost too simple. But your body is dehydrated when you first wake up, and starting with water before caffeine — before anything — makes a real difference. I felt it right away. More clarity in the morning. Less of that foggy, slow start. It's a small thing that signals to your body: we're taking care of ourselves today.
And that's really what all of this is about.
Permission To Start Small
I think a lot of women my age look at a morning routine or a wellness habit and immediately think — I can't do that. That's too much. That's for younger people. Or healthier people. Or people who don't have my problems.
And I understand that feeling. I really do. But I also know it's not true.
You don't need a perfect routine. You don't need an hour of movement or a supplement stack or everything figured out all at once. You need one thing. One small choice that tells your body you're not done yet.
A glass of water when you wake up. A ten-minute walk. Five minutes of quiet before the chaos starts. That's enough to begin.
The women I see struggling most aren't struggling because they're too old or too far gone. They're struggling because they're exhausted, running on stress and cortisol, and their body is in survival mode. And a body in survival mode holds onto everything — fat, tension, fatigue — because it thinks it has to.
If any of that sounds familiar, I actually did a deep dive on this in this week's YouTube video. It's called Why Midlife Weight Loss Feels Impossible — And It Has Nothing To Do With Willpower and it connects all the dots between energy, cortisol, hormones, and why the scale won't move no matter what you do. Watch it here. ➡️
What Moving First Actually Does
When you move first — even just a little — before the stress of the day hits, before the to-do list takes over, before everyone else's needs crowd out your own — you change your chemistry. Cortisol comes down. Energy comes up. Your body gets the signal that it's safe. That it's cared for. That it doesn't need to hold on so tight.
That's what ten years of morning movement taught me. Not discipline. Not willpower. Just a consistent signal to my body that we do this every day. And the days I don't? I feel it.
